Our Founder
Dr. John W. Yale, Jr. worked with the yucca plant for over 60 years to develop and refine the products that American Extracts offers today. His studies in Plant Pathology began at USC where he earned his Masters in Botany. After earning his Masters, he began working for the University of Riverside at their Citrus Experiment Station, and then decided to go back to school at Oregon State University where he earned his PhD. He began working in agricultural research with Union Oil Co. in Brea, CA.
His interest in natural products sparked a new direction in his research when he found yucca fibers being used to produce lovely flowers in a desert garden. He discovered that a steroid saponin in yucca helps soil and plants retain water and nutrients that enables them to survive stressful environmental conditions. He also found beneficial results in treating odors from sewage and animal waste.
Dr. Yale relocated to Tulare County in 1959 to further pursue this interest. He worked with Pent-a-Vate in Lindsay, RDS Laboratories in Exeter, Distributor’s Processing, Inc. and Biological Products, Inc. both in Woodville. He established Cellu-Con, Inc. in Strathmore, CA in 1985, and American Extracts in 2004 Porterville,CA.
